Massage therapy in the UK: choosing a practitioner
Massage therapy covers Swedish, deep tissue, sports, aromatherapy and pregnancy massage, typically in 30–90 minute sessions. It sits outside England's proposed cosmetic-procedure licensing scheme because it does not penetrate the skin — and there is no legal qualification requirement to practise it.

Is it regulated?
No licence is required to perform this anywhere in the UK. Sits outside the licensing scheme as drafted — it does not penetrate the skin or apply light, electricity, cold or heat in the way the scheme defines. Qualification and insurance still matter, and no law requires either.
Basis: Section 180, Health and Care Act 2022 and the Government's consultation response of 7 August 2025, tracked in House of Commons Library briefing CBP-10331.
What the practitioner should hold
Level 3 massage qualifications are the common standard; sports and pregnancy massage usually carry their own additional certificates. Anatomy and physiology training is the part that matters most and is easy to ask about.
Insurance
Public liability plus treatment risk. Pregnancy massage is sometimes excluded — worth checking specifically if that is what you are booking.
What it costs
Guide price: we do not yet have enough member listings to publish a reliable range for massage. We publish this figure only when there is real data behind it.
Questions to ask before you book
- What qualification do you hold, and does it cover pregnancy or sports massage?
- How do you adapt pressure, and how do I tell you it is too much?
- Should I mention medication or recent injury?
- What does the session actually include — is consultation time inside the hour?
Red flags
- No health questionnaire before a first treatment
- No screening for pregnancy or recent surgery
- Claims to treat diagnosed medical conditions
- Unwillingness to say what qualification they hold
Common questions
Do massage therapists need a qualification in the UK?
Not by law. Massage is not a protected profession and no licence is required. Insurers generally require a Level 3 qualification, which is why asking about insurance is an indirect way of asking about training.
Is pregnancy massage safe?
Many therapists offer it from the second trimester with specific training and equipment. Ask directly whether they hold a pregnancy massage qualification and whether their insurance covers it — some policies exclude it.
How often should I book?
For general wellbeing, monthly is typical; for a specific issue, a therapist may suggest a short course and then reassess. Be wary of an open-ended plan sold up front.
