Lash extensions and lifts: what to check first
Lash treatments cover extensions, lifts and tints — typically 45 minutes for a lift and up to two hours for a full set of extensions. They sit outside England's proposed cosmetic-procedure licensing scheme, and no qualification is legally required. Patch testing is the single most important safety step.
Last reviewed · How we research and check this
Is it regulated?
No licence is required to perform this anywhere in the UK. Sits outside the licensing scheme as drafted — it does not penetrate the skin or apply light, electricity, cold or heat in the way the scheme defines. Qualification and insurance still matter, and no law requires either.
Basis: Section 180, Health and Care Act 2022 and the Government's consultation response of 7 August 2025, tracked in House of Commons Library briefing CBP-10331.
What the practitioner should hold
Level 2 or 3 with lash-specific training; extensions and lifts are usually separate certificates. Ask which they hold for the treatment you are booking.
Insurance
Check adhesive-related reactions are covered — this is the most common claim in lash work.
What it costs
Guide price: we do not yet have enough member listings to publish a reliable range for lash treatments. We publish this figure only when there is real data behind it.
Questions to ask before you book
- Will you patch test me, and how far in advance?
- Which adhesive do you use, and does it contain formaldehyde?
- How long should a full set take? (Rushed application is how eyes get glued)
- What is your infill policy and cost?
Red flags
- No patch test offered before a first appointment
- A full set completed in under an hour
- Eyes stinging or watering during application treated as normal
- No aftercare instructions
Common questions
Do I really need a patch test for lashes?
Yes. Lash adhesive reactions can be severe and can develop after previous uneventful appointments. A practitioner who skips patch testing is taking a risk with your eyes, and an insurer may decline the claim if it happens.
How long do lash extensions last?
Typically two to four weeks before an infill, following your own lash growth cycle. Any claim of permanence is untrue — extensions shed with the natural lash they are attached to.
Are lash treatments regulated?
No. There is no licensing scheme covering them and no legal qualification requirement. Insurance and training are voluntary, which is why they are worth checking.
