Afro and textured hair: finding someone who knows your hair
Finding a stylist genuinely trained in afro and textured hair is a real and repeated problem, and it is not solved by a salon simply saying yes. Ask what they trained in specifically, and ask to see work on hair with a texture pattern like yours.

Is it regulated?
No licence is required to perform this anywhere in the UK. Cutting, colouring and styling do not penetrate the skin or apply light, electricity, cold or heat, so they fall outside the scheme’s definition altogether rather than merely awaiting it. Qualification and insurance still matter, and no law requires either.
Basis: Section 180, Health and Care Act 2022 and the Government's consultation response of 7 August 2025, tracked in House of Commons Library briefing CBP-10331.
What the practitioner should hold
Afro and textured hairdressing has its own qualifications at Level 2 and Level 3 — it is a distinct discipline, not an add-on. A stylist trained only on straight hair is not trained on yours.
Insurance
Standard salon treatment-risk cover applies. Relaxers and chemical straightening are usually rated separately, so ask specifically if that is what you are booking.
What it costs
Guide price: we do not yet have enough member listings to publish a reliable range for afro & textured. We publish this figure only when there is real data behind it.
Questions to ask before you book
- What did you train in for textured hair, specifically?
- Can I see work on hair with a similar texture to mine?
- How do you approach detangling and heat?
- What will this do to my curl pattern long term?
Red flags
- Vague reassurance instead of a named qualification
- No portfolio of textured hair at all
- Reaching for heat or relaxer as the default answer
- Blaming your hair rather than explaining the plan
Common questions
Is there a separate qualification for afro hairdressing?
Yes. Afro and textured hairdressing has its own Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications from the same awarding bodies. It is a distinct discipline with distinct training, not a module inside general hairdressing.
Why is it hard to find a stylist for textured hair?
Training in textured hair has historically been optional in general hairdressing courses, so competence varies widely between salons that all describe themselves the same way. Asking what someone trained in specifically is the only reliable filter.
